Herzog Transit Services, Inc. is currently looking for a DMU Mechanic in Austin, TX. This position is responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance tasks on Stadler GTW 2/6 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) passenger rail vehicle mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Successfully complete any and all vendor supplied training courses related to any DMU vehicle system and/or subsystem.
  • Assist with DMU testing and acceptance program.
  • Assist vendors in repairing the DMU during warranty period.
  • Assist in setting up the DMU Maintenance Shop.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair and test DMU systems and equipment.
  • Perform mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic diagnosis.
  • Document warranty data according to client policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all safety, operating and maintenance procedures.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment to complete repairs in a timely manner.
  • Provide passenger service support to minimize service delays.
  • Perform re-railing operations as required.
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather as needed.
  • Maintain small tool equipment.
  • Work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Utilize the client supplied MMIS system as required.
  • Required to work at any time of the day or night as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Diesel and/or Locomotive Mechanical background a plus.
  • Associates degree in electrical/electronic or mechanical technology or related experience.
  • Two – five years verifiable mechanical and/or electrical work experience.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Understanding chain of custody concepts with regards to parts issuance and distribution.
  • Prior rail maintenance experience highly desirable.
  • Able to conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Able to use various software programs as required.
  • Work in close proximity to moving vehicles.
  • Satisfactory employment record.


Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
  • Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.


Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job.

  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and vegetation including but not limited to rocks, inclines, beams, mud, wet, ice on a consistent basis, sometimes great distances.
  • Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind.
  • Must be able to operate hand controls and drive various construction equipment on the job.
  • Able to carry various equipment, parts, and tools across uneven surfaces.
  • Able to grasp or squeeze various equipment and tools
  • Able to ascend/descend stairs
  • Able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs
  • Able to tolerate repetitive and static movements, including but not limited to squatting, bending, overhead reaching, etc.
  • Able to sit and stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work in a safety sensitive work environment.
  • Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals
