TransitAmerica Services, Inc. is currently looking for an Assistant Director of Train Operations in San Jose, CA. This position is responsible for supervisory, technical and administrative heavy rail operations work. The ADTO is responsible for directing and controlling, through subordinate supervisors, the day-to-day activities of train operations (yard, terminals and road) and station operations for a segment of a rail line or the day-to-day operations of the revenue line from the Central Control Facility (CCF), and for planning and directing the resources required to provide the service to meet established schedule requirements. Under the guidance of the Director Train Operations, the ADTO implements and modifies operating plans and procedures to ensure that activities are conducted safely and in conformance with accepted practices and guidelines. The ADTO has the latitude for independent judgment and action within the guidelines provided by the Director Train Operations, Deputy General Manager of Operations or the General Manager.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exercises leadership and supervision over a Commuter Rail Operation division which is composed of personnel from field operations, Maintenance of Equipment (MOE), Maintenance of Way (MOW) and stations and facilities. Provides direct leadership and supervision to the Managers Train Operations (MTO), Supervisors Train Operations (STO), Supervisor Crew Management and Visual Messaging Clerks. Provide counsel and guidance to the staff and renders performance appraisal evaluation on the personnel. Recommends personnel actions such as promotions, demotions and disciplinary actions.
  • Reviews daily and other operations reports (accidents, violations, complaints, worker's compensation, etc.) to ensure that work is accomplished properly and effectively and within established guidelines. Ensures that the physical plant is maintained, contacting the MOW as appropriate; works with stations and facilities personnel to plan major facilities maintenance activities. Works with MOE personnel to ensure that vehicle requirements are met for normal and special events.
  • Maintains close liaison with other operations and maintenance supervisors in the execution of responsibilities.
  • Assists and manages budget preparation and execution of assigned functions. Monitors productivity, and establishes specified work standards, goals and objectives to ensure that all activities are accomplished safely, efficiently, economically and in conformance with assigned mission.
  • Provides Commuter Rail Operations or CCF support for special events, new phase openings, emergencies, contractor activities, testing and any other activities which impact revenue service.
  • Evaluates and discusses performance with subordinate personnel, recommending commendations or disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Prepares various reports related to activities and performs related duties as required.
  • Implements operating rules, regulations and procedures for CCF. Enforces safety rules and recommends changes to improve operating and safety procedures. Implements contingency plans and makes changes to scheduled service to minimize service disruptions.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor's Degree in transportation or equal work experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience in a transportation operations or related field, with a minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in a Rail Transportation operational environment is preferred, but, not necessary. Experience in administrative procedures, i.e., budget, cost control, payroll, interviewing, conducting investigations, and report writing, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge, or ability to rapidly acquire a thorough knowledge, of how a commuter rail system is operated; a demonstrated knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques in an operational environment, preferably in a transportation, or transportation related environment; and, a working knowledge, or the ability to acquire a working knowledge, of the principles of operation and maintenance of rail transit equipment.
  • Ability to lead and manage all the diverse rail operational personnel functions; and ability to maintain current knowledge and understanding of the state of the art in rapid rail activities and to contribute to the solution of technical problems.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and managerial skills, to include budget preparation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, ability to maintain a rapport with employees and other personnel and the ability to deal courteously and effectively with others.
